How a “Thank You” could be the difference between getting or losing the job

Everyone leaves an interview with a genuine “thank you” and good handshake. But what can saying “thank you” after the interview mean? It may seem like a small gesture, but sending an email and an actual thank you note can mean the difference between getting the job or not.

Brittney Helmrich provides 15 quick but powerful tips to writing a thank you note in her Business News Daily article. By sending a thank you email within the hour after an interview a candidate might just be the one hired if the company is looking to make an immediate decision. Sending a note the old fashion way can also provide candidates with the opportunity to stay connected with the company in case future opportunities arise.

Some of these tips include:

  • Tailoring the note to the company’s culture
  • Write what you wish you had mentioned
  • Attach your resume and cover letter
  • Use it as a follow up
  • Send it in a timely manner

Taking the time to write something as small as an email shows potential employers why and how much a candidate is invested in the opportunity. The courtesy showed to an interviewer will bring candidates a better chance of being hired for the job that could become their career.
